New Homeowner Must Haves

When you buy a home, stepping into your new home for the first time as the owner is an amazing experience. And as the owner, you may quickly realize you’re not fully equipped to tackle all those tasks that come with being an owner. Below are some of the often forgotten items that will no doubt be an excellent addition to your new home. They’re also great items to have on your ‘New Home Must Haves’ list.

Indoor Equipment

If you’re a handy person, it’s likely you may already have some of the items below. But if not, these are items that will inevitably come in handy for those projects and odd jobs pop up in your new home:

  • Extra sets of keys

  • Binder to keep all important documents related to appliances and/or home systems

  • Ladder or step stool

  • Tool kit - hammer, measuring tape, different screwdrivers, stud finder, level, multi-tool, and anything else that will come in handy

  • Extension cords

  • Surge protector

  • Fire and Carbon Monoxide detectors (your new home may already have these built in or installed, but it’s a good idea to check and have a backup in case of failure)

Outdoor Equipment

Not all homes come with yards or outdoor spaces, but many do, and if you’ve been an apartment dweller or living in a big city for a while, outdoor equipment is easily forgotten when it comes to items you’ll need for your new home. The essentials are definitely a necessity if you’re planning on taking care of your outdoor areas yourself:

  • Lawn Mower

  • Wheelbarrow

  • Edger

  • Shovel

  • Garden hose

  • Hose nozzle or watering arm

  • Sprinkler (if there isn’t a built-in system)

  • Watering can

  • Rake

  • Gardening tools

  • Outdoor extension cord

  • Anything else that will help keep your yard in tip top shape

Depending on where you live, you may also want to get:

  • Snow shovel

  • Ice melt/Deicer

Emergency Items

Most people don’t anticipate encountering many emergencies, but as a homeowner, you should be prepared if there is an emergency in your home. Emergency items to have on hand can include:

  • Fire Extinguisher

  • Emergency Kit

  • First Aid Kit

  • Lockbox/Safe

  • Backup medications for those individuals or pets that need them to survive

Every household is different - take the above items as suggestions and know it’s highly likely you’ll want or need additional items that help make your new house your home.
